Inside Bar Strategy

The Inside Bar LE (Long Entry) and Inside Bar SE (Short Entry) are volatility-contraction strategies. They identify a specific two-bar pattern where the market “pauses,” with the current price range sitting entirely within the previous bar’s range.

How the Logic Works

Both strategies identify the exact same visual pattern: an Inside Bar. This occurs when the current bar’s High is lower than the previous bar’s High, and its Low is higher than the previous bar’s Low

1. Inside Bar LE (Long Entry)

  • The Condition: It confirms that the current bar is “inside” the previous one.
  • The Entry Signal: A Buy Market order is generated.
  • The Goal: To capture an upward breakout, assuming the period of low volatility (the pause) will resolve with a surge in buying pressure.

2. Inside Bar SE (Short Entry)

  • The Condition: It confirms the same “inside” relationship between the two bars.
  • The Entry Signal: A Sell Short Market order is generated.
  • The Goal: To capture a downward breakout, assuming the consolidation will lead to a sharp move lower.

Key Characteristics

  • Timing: The entry is executed at the open of the next bar immediately following the confirmed inside bar.
  • No Inputs: These built-in strategies typically have no user-configurable inputs. They rely strictly on the mathematical high/low relationship of two consecutive bars.
  • Labeling: In the TradeStation Strategy Performance Report and on the chart, these trades are labeled as “Inside”

Strategic Considerations

  • Volatility Coiling: An inside bar is like a “coiled spring.” While the pattern itself is neutral, these strategies bet on the direction (LE for up, SE for down).
  • Whipsaw Risk: In sideways or “choppy” markets, inside bars happen frequently. Without a trend filter, the strategy may enter a trade just as the market continues to range sideways.
  • System Building: Professional traders often combine both LE and SE to create a “dual-breakout” system or add a Trend Filter (like a Moving Average) to only take Inside Bar entries that align with the long-term trend.
